Class of 2008 Honor Graduates

The Citadel on Saturday, May 3 during commencement for the South Carolina Corps of Cadets named its honor graduates.


The David Shingler Spell Honor Graduates awards program recognizes the two cadets with the highest academic achievement. Spell, who sponsors the award, is a member of The Citadel Class of 1950 and a resident of Charleston, S.C. 

This year’s top academic honors go to: 

  • First Honor Graduate – Jui-Chiang Chen, Shindian City, Taipei County, Taiwan
  • Second Honor Graduate – Daniel Patrick Strickland, Wakefield, R.I. 

Cadet Jui-Chiang ("Jacky") Chen is a mathematics major from Xindien (City), Taipei (County) Taiwan. He graduated from Chien-Kuo Senior High in 2003 and entered the Chinese Air Force Academy, which sponsored his education at The Citadel.

While at The Citadel Jacky served as president of Math Club for three years, and he worked as a mathematics tutor for the Writing and Learning Center for two years. His honors include election to Phi Kappa Phi and Sigma Xi honor societies, Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities, a Phi Beta Kappa Scholarship, George E. Reves Award for Superior Ability and Outstanding Achievement in Mathematics and Gold Stars every semester. After graduation he will be commissioned in the Taiwanese Air Force.


Second Honor Graduate Cadet Daniel Patrick Strickland is as a Business Administration major with accounting concentration. Along with his work in accounting, Strickland has been an Honors Program participant and was named to both the Phi Kappa Phi and Beta Gamma Sigma national honor societies.

In addition to building an outstanding record of achievement in the classroom, Strickland has also been an integral part of the Corps of Cadets. He served as Golf Company’s first sergeant in his junior year, and this year he was the Golf Company commander. In his sophomore year, Strickland spent a semester studying at the University of Auckland in New Zealand. During his high school days, he spent some of his spare time as a volunteer firefighter. Later this summer he will begin his career in public accounting in the Atlanta offices of Deloitte, an international accounting and consulting firm.
