The Mid-Autumn Festival , this year. 溫 在 春

The Mid-Autumn Festival , also known as the Moon Festival or Mooncake Festival, is a very popular lunar harvest festival. The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the few most important holidays in the Chinese calendar, the others are Spring Festival and Winter Solstice. There are some cultural or regional customs, such as:
1.Eating mooncakes.
2.Matchmaking:Dances are usually held for young men and women to find partners. “One by one, young women are encouraged to throw their handkerchiefs to the crowd. The young man who catches and returns the handkerchief has a chance of romance with the luck girl.
3.Carrying brightly lit lanterns, lighting lanterns on towers, floating sky lanterns
Pen-Si in the New Taipei City is a very famous place to float sky lanterns I had ever been there one years ago.
4.Burning incense in reverence to deities including Chang’e
5.Moon rabbit is a traditional icon.
Celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival is strongly associated with the legend of Houyi and Chang’e (后羿和嫦娥), the Moon Goddess. This tradition was happened at around 2200 BCE, during the reign of the legendary Emperor Yao.

The legend states that Houyi was a handsome young man and Chang’e was a beautiful young girl, working in the palace of the Jade Emperor as an attendant to the Queen Mother of the West (the Jade Emperor’s wife). Houyi aroused the jealousy of the other immortals, and he often slandered them before the Jade Emperor. Houyi and his wife, Chang’e, were eventually banished from heaven. They were forced to live on Earth. Houyi had gotten to hunt to survive and became a well- skilled and famous archer.

At that time, there were ten suns. One day, all ten of the suns circled together, causing the Earth to burn. Emperor Yao, the Emperor of China, commanded Houyi to use his archery skill to shoot down one of the suns. Upon completion of his task, the Emperor rewarded Houyi with a pill that granted eternal life. Emperor Yao advised Houyi not to swallow the pill immediately but instead to prepare himself by praying and fasting for a year before taking it. Houyi took the pill home and hid it in the master bedroom. One day, Houyi was summoned away again by Emperor Yao. During her husband’s absence, Chang’e, noticed a white beam of light beckoning in the master bedroom, and discovered the pill. Chang’e swallowed it and immediately found that she could fly. Houyi returned home, realizing what had happened he began to reprimand his wife. Chang’e escaped by flying out the window into the sky. Houyi pursued her halfway across the heavens but was forced to return to Earth because of strong headwinds. Chang’e reached the moon, where she coughed up part of the pill. Chang’e commanded the hare that lived on the moon to make another pill. Chang’e would then be able to return to Earth and her husband. The legend states that the hare is still pounding herbs, trying to make the pill. Once a year, on the night of the Mid-Autumn Festival, Houyi visits his wife. That is the reason why the moon is very full and beautiful on that night. This description appears in written form in the Han dynasty (206 BC-24 AD) collections. This year, during the Moon Festival night, we encountered the rainy and cloudy weather, we can not clearly see the Moon in the sky. The Moon we saw was not bright.

My family usually cook at home, and seldom go out for eating. My wife always wants us to stay out of the kitchen while she is cooking. The Moon Festival is a holiday. My wife does not cook, therefore, she can rest and enjoy the holiday.
Instead, our family and close relatives coming from Taipei, there were 14 persons, we were together to go to the different restaurant to enjoy the different kind of food. We had Italian food for our lunch at the 8th Floor, Shin-Kong Mitsukoshi Department Store where is located at Tsoying Terminal Station of HSR.

My son’s wife is a vegetarians. And she came back to Kaohsiung at 3pm by HSR. For warm welcoming her, we selected the vegetarians dishes for our dinner. I have gotten accustomed to the local food. I am not a picky eater. My wife is a spicy food lover. She often has red pepper with each dish. We went to the 菜香耕restaurant where is located at中華 road. We ordered a lot of dishes and one soup. The food we ordered were very delicious and with few salt and not oily. I liked it very much. It is good for our health.
